Bacon and Onion Chutney

Want to add a little variety to your supper? Try making a bacon onion chutney. This simple 7 ingredient, recipe will add lots of flavor to sandwiches. Try adding it to a cream cheese dip!

Ingredients:

1 package Bacon (I’ve used both 12 oz and 16 oz. Either will work)

1 big or 2 medium yellow onions

1/3 cup water

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup Worcestershire Sauce or Balsamic Vinegar (we like to switch it up)

1/4 tsp salt and pepper

  1. Start by making the chutney. Roughly chop the bacon into pieces. Cook on medium until fully cooked, I always watch the fat for bubbles to know the fat has been rendered all of the way. Drain the fat off.

  2. While bacon is cooking, dice onion up and get your water, sugar and Worcestershire sauce ready.

  3. Once the bacon is cooked and the fat has been drained, add in the rest of the ingredients. Bring to a simmer, and reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for 15 minutes.

  4. After 15 minutes, check the onions to see if they have softened up. Remove lid and continue to cook for an additional 25-40 minutes, until the chutney is a consistency you like. Remove from heat, you can use right away or cool and store for later use.

Use this chutney to spice up grilled cheese sandwiches, add to a cream cheese dip, or make a spread with mayo and sour cream to add to beef sandwiches!
